Algeria has been torn apart by the civil war that has dominated the northern, and most populated part of the country. Today it appears that the government has been able to get the situation under control, even if there still are some clashes between militant Islamists and government troops from time to time.
The elections in recent years have been relatively free, with the exception of the presidential election of April, 1999 when all but one candidate was forced to resign.
