Bandar-e Anzali
City in northern Iran with 110,000 inhabitants (2005 estimate) on the Caspian Sea. It lies in the Gilan Province.
Its economy is largely based upon trade on the Caspian Sea, and the city port is hence of vital importance. It lies in a channel between two peninsulas, and is irregular in depth. There is an oil depot, a wharf and a fishery station. The port was modernized during World War 2.
The city is connected by road to Rasht, 40 km southeast, the country of Azerbaijan, 200 km north, and Teheran, 400 km southeast. It has good shipping connections with Baku of Azerbaijan.
The population is predominantly Persian, but with large minorities of Russians, Armenians, Caucasians and Turkmens.
History
Early 19th century: Founded.
1920: Occupied by the Bolshevik Russians, who tried to found the Soviet Republic of Gilan.
1921: The Soviet control collapses, and Bandar-e Anzail comes back under Persian control.
