Birjand
Persian: bīrjand

Birjand, Iran

Birjand, Iran

City in eastern Iran with 10,000 inhabitants (2005 estimate) lying on low hills in a barren valley 1455 metres above sea level. Birjand is the only city of any size in a 200 km diametre wide region in southern Khorasan Province.
Birjand is an important regional centre of some agriculture and pasturage. Birjans use local wool for a large scale production of carpets.
Historically, Birjand has been the seat of semi-independent rulers and a centre for caravans, mainly between Afghanistan and the rest of Iran.
