Denizli
City in southwestern Turkey with 280,000 inhabitants (1996 estimate) on the Cürüksu River, a tributary to the Menderes River, at 360 metres above sea level. It is the capital of Denizli Province with 860,000 inhabitants (2004 estimate).
Denizli is mainly an agricultural city, and a market place for the surrounding agricultural area. Here the cultivation of cotton, cereals, figs, tobacco, along with livestock raising, are the main activities.
Denizli is connected with Izmir 180 km west by road, together with other cities in western Anatolia.
Thanks to devastating earthquakes, Denizli has no real landmarks, but Pamukkale lies 20 km from the city. It is a resort where limestone deposits from the hot springs have formed basins and cascades.
History
12th century: Denizli succeeds Lycum as the most important economic city of the region.
1710: Earthquake devastates Denizli.
1899: Heavy earthquake destroys parts of Denizli.
