Diwaniyah
Arabic: ad-diwānīya



Diwaniyah

City in central Iraq with 390,000 inhabitants (2005 estimate), in a riverine area 30 km west of a channel of the Euphrates river. Diwaniyah is the administrative centre of the Qadissiyah governorate with about 840,000 inhabitants (2002 estimate).
Diwaniyah is the centre of an agricultural region, where palm trees, vineyards and orchards are cultivated. Diwaniyah serves as a marketplace for dates and grain.
35 km northeast of Diwaniyah lie the ruins of ancient Nippur.

History
2000: Unrest in Diwaniyah, where armed locals attack leaders from the Ba'ath Party with rockets.
