Elazig
City in eastern Turkey with 270,000 inhabitants (2004 estimate) on an elevation of 1,020 metres above sea level, near the Keban Dam, a large reservoir for the Euphrates. It is the capital of the Elazig Province with 570,000 inhabitants (2004 estimate).
The main product of Elazig and its surrounding region is wine, but a wide variety of other agricultural products are cultivated here as well. Modern Elazig is also a trading centre for crops and livestock.
Elazig is connected by both rail and road to Malatya 70 km southwest and Diyarbakir 200 km southeast.
Elazig has no particular landmarks, but the Archaeological and Ethnographic Museum holds a unique collection of jewellery from the ancient kingdom of Urartu, lasting from 1200 to 800 BCE.
The population of Elazig is a mixture of Kurds, Turks and Azeris.
HISTORY
1862: The town Marmuret el-Aziz is founded by Sultan Abdülaziz to resettle excess population from the town of Harput. It functions as a military garrison.
1923: Marmuret el-Aziz is renamed Elazig.
1974: Keban Dam is completed.
1975: Euphrates University is founded.
