Oasis and town of central Algeria with around 15,000 inhabitants (2006 estimate), located to the Sahara desert, at the eastern border of the Grand Erg Occidental at an elevation of 380 metres.
El-Golea has an estimated 180,000 palm trees. The oasis lies beneath an escarpment rising up to 200 metres above. Some of the largest continuous areas of sand dunes begin just a few kilometres to the west of the oasis.
El-Golea has good road connections and a national airport 3 km west of town centre. Gharda´a is 300 km north, Ouargla 460 km northeast.
The area is inhabited by the Zenete Berbers.
