Litani River
Arabic: nahr 'al-lītāniyy
River of Lebanon, 145 km long, and the country's most important.
The river originates west of Baalbek and flows south through the Bekaa Valley. The river cuts through the Lebanon Mountains in a 280 deep gorge and ends in the Mediterranean Sea midway between Sayda and Tyre.
The Litani is a very important water source for both the Bekaa Valley as well as southern Lebanon.
The lower part, the part flowing westbound, is often called Qasimiyeh.
Right south of the Bekaa Valley, a 1,350 metre long dam has created a 11 km² wide lake, called Qaraoun. Lebanon's largest hydroelectric plant is linked to the dam, with a capacity of 185 megawatts.
