Mauritania is politically stable, there is an active democracy, where several parties participate. The country also has freedom of speech.
Mauritania has a system which deserves to be called democratic, especially compared to what is found in other African countries. The political freedom and freedom of speech is due to international pressure, as Mauritania is totally dependent on the goodwill of western nations.
But the political freedom has not lead to any changes in the power patterns in recent elections. Therefore, and Mauritania is still the victim of some criticism from the international society.
