Muhammad 5

(Fez, Morocco 1909- Rabat, Morocco 1961) Sultan of Morocco 1927-57, king 1957-61.
Early in th 1950s Muhammad 5 started to oppose the French, as he associated himself with the independence movement. Muhammad 5 was deposed by France in 1953 since he had refused to sign agreements with them and as there had been rioting by the public.
Muhammad 5 stayed in exile until 1955. When Morocco became independet in 1956, and Muhammad king, he disentangled himself from the independence movement, and made effective use of the military forces with his son Hassan in the position as army commander.
