Name given to several empires ruling over lands with Iran in its centre. Many prefer to use "Iran" in place of "Persia". Simply for no other reason than reflecting the most common usage, this encyclopaedia uses "Persia".
"Iran" may perfectly replace "Persia" in this context. The one main advantage of using Iran instead of Persia, is that several of the peoples that trace their history back to these times in these areas consider themselves "Iranian", but not "Persian". Persians are simply one of several Iranian peoples.
