Collective term for religions of the peoples speaking Northcentral Semitic languages, corresponding to the modern countries of the inner Middle East: Syria, Lebanon, Israel, Palestine and Jordan.
The term is only used for ancient religions.
Systematic research into West Semitic religions has mainly dealt with Canaanite and Phoenician religions, which is a group of religions which often corresponds with the West Semitic religions. Where this similarity doesn't apply is with Hebrew religion, which would develop into Judaism. The religion of the Hebrews share many myths and concepts with Canaanite and Phoenician religions, perhaps even a common origin, yet, within recorded historical time there are many profound differences.
