City in north-central Libya with 170,000 inhabitants (2005 estimate), on the Mediterranean Sea.
Sirte has been projected to become Libya's capital, but no clear schedule of a move from Tripoli has been set forth. As of yet, the only institution established here is the General People's Congress
The main activities of Sirte are with administration and development. There is also some agriculture and fisheries.
Sirte is largely a modern city, but distinguishes itself with not having a centre.
Sirte is excellently connected with all of Libya, being along the coastal highway connecting Tripoli and Benghazi. It is also the starting point of the main road leading into the Fezzan region in the Sahara.
Mu'ammar Gadhafi was born 20 km from Sirte, and attended school here from the age of 10.
HISTORY
1998: Al-Bayda in Cyrenaica is declared new capital, causing much uncertainty with the future of Sirte.
