City in central Egypt with 210,000 inhabitants (2005 estimate), on the western bank of the Nile, across from the city of Akhmim. It is the capital of Sohag governorate with 3.8 million inhabitants (2005 estimate) and a territory of 1,547 km².
Industries of Sohag include cotton ginning, weaving of textiles and processed food.
Sohag is connected with other urban centres by road and rail. Luxor is 200 km southeast and Assyut 105 km north.
Sohag Institute is associated with al-Azhar University in Cairo.
