The list below show 33 universities as of 2009, corresponding to a university density of 1:200,000 inhabitants, placing Sudan as no. 17 of 22 in the MENA region.
Only 1 university make it to the World Top 6000 list with Webometrics, University of Khartoum at no. 4371. This places Sudan behind most other MENA countries, but ahead of countries like Libya and Tunisia. In this respect, Sudan is with 3% of its universities on this list, ranked 15 of 22 in MENA.
When judging Sudanese education system, lack of information is a problem. Judged from what is available, it appears that many of Sudan's universities lack central qualities associated with such institutions. An overstretch in new institutions cause the qualifications of teachers to be behind many MENA countries, and most institutions have limited facilities. Yet, the growth in recent years, reflect honest ambitions of the government, and what is in the making may be a institutions of increasingly better standard.
