Human rights
Sudan's legal system is based upon Sharia, the so-called Islamic law. It is however implemented even on the Christian population.
Sudan's implementation of Sharia has resulted in limited rights for women, imposing a conservative dress code and restrictions on movement.
Amputations are being used as a way of punishing for certain crimes, like robbery. A high number of people are being executed every year.
There have been over the recent years been a number of incidents of killings performed by armed police and security officers.
Sudan practices a policy of strict control of political dissidents. Political opponents can be detained for long periods with trial. Lawyers, journalists and human rights defenders are harassed and intimidated.
The ongoing civil war against the Sudan People's Liberation Army (SPLA) in the southern half of the country has led to many violations on human rights, both towards civilians as well as imprisoned soldiers. The abuses are performed from both the government army as well as SPLA.
