Sulayman
Arabic:
sulaymani bni cabdi l-malīk
(674-717) Caliph of Sunni Islam 715-717, as part of the Umayyad Dynasty.
Sulayman was both a merciless politician and an effective one. He has been widely condemned for persecuting and executing political opponents. Yet, he did the unusual act of appointing a successor outside his immediate family, the popular and able Umar 2.
He oversaw military campaigns into Persia, and sent troops towards Constantinople, which would be besieged until his death.
Biography
674: Born as son of the coming caliph Abd al-Malik.
715: Sulayman's brother al-Walid 1 dies, and with the aid of opponents of al-Hajjaj is Sulayman able to claim the caliphate.
— Persuades Umar to accept becoming the next caliph.
717: Dies.
