Having a military background, much of Hamad's attention in his politics has been military and security oriented. Under him, an old dispute over where the exact borders between Saudi Arabia and Qatar should run, has been revived. Before becoming emir, he was active in modernizing both the military as well as the country's infrastructure.
Biography
1950: Born in Doha, as son of Shaykh Khalifa bin Hamad ath-Thani.
1971: Graduates from Royal Military Academy, Sandhurst, Britain.
— Joins the Qatari military forces with the rank of major.
1975: Appointed major-general and commander-in-chief of the armed forces.
1977 May: Appointed crown prince, whereupon he becomes minister of defence.
1991: Under control of Hamad, Qatari forces participates in the UN-lead attack on Iraq.
— Hamad gets much control over the politics of Qatar, after that his father, Khalifa, leaves the daily governing to his sons.
1994: Hamad reconciles with Iraq.
1995 June: While his father is staying in Geneva, Switzerland, Hamad disposes his father in a bloodless coup.
