He is ranked among the greatest kings of Assyria during its Middle period. During the first years of his reign, he focused on pacifying the lands to the north and northwest, from Lake Van to the Syrian coast. Yet, the Arameans of the northwest never came under control, war in these lands became a recurring issue throughout his reign.
The empire he left his successor was a capricious one, the following decades became a period of substantial territorial loss for Assyria.
He built many grand buildings in Ashur and Nineveh and other cities.
