Tikrit
Arabic: tikrīt


City in Iraq with about 100,000 inhabitants (2005 estimate), about 160 km northwest of Baghdad, on the Tigris river.
Tikrit is the home town of Saddam Hussein, and its importance in Saddam Hussein's Iraq has been substantial, as Saddam has recruited many of his closest allies and leaders of the national bureaucracy from the Tikriti clan. Moreover, the city has been adorned with many great official buildings, schools and some of the best infrastructure Iraq has seen.

HISTORY

12th century: Saladin is born in Tikrit.
14th century: Tikrit is devastated by the troops of Timur Lenk.
1937: Saddam Hussein is born in Tikrit.
20th century: Tikrit starts growing into a major city.
