LUXOR: Temple of Merneptah 
What is, unfortunately, the most notable thing about the temple today is the terrible reconstruction. Swiss archaeologists of the 1970s had something that may have seemed like a good idea at the time: Instaed of trying to rebuild as much as possible, they rather made every found piece into a sculpture placed on a ramp of modern white bricks. Almost like an outdoor museum.Unfortunately, it doesn't work! What saves the site from an even more complete neglect than today, are the displays of statues and wall-decorations. Also, stroll over to the sacred lake and look at the copy of the Israel Stele.Merneptah used stones and reliefs from the 150 year older nearby Temple of Amenophis 3. In some instances, he had his own carvings done over the original ones, in other cases he just reused the whole lot. This has resulted in an abundance of the wall-decorations showing Amenophis 3 in Merneptah's temple!
