This temple was one of the largest in Thebes, and although large parts are since long gone, the remaining parts are definately worth the visit. It was begun in the 13th century BCE by Pharaoh Seti 1 and was completed by his son, the famous Ramses 2. The pylons are all gone, mainly because they were made from mudbrick, and exposed to the annual inundations of the Nile. Also gone is the row of sphinxes leading to the inner parts. This, however, still stands, creaing a different facade than what is usual with other Theban temples. There is a range of deities venerated here, but the Theban triad of Amon, Mut and Khonsu are the most important, each having a barque shrine. Within the parts of the temple which are badly fared today, were a royal palace. It was located just in from the entrance pylon. It is the first temple palace of the New Kingdom.
