Although named after the Egyptian protective god of Bes (see Dendera, Egypt), this mausoleum very much belongs to one national Libyan culture.
It belongs to the 2nd century BCE, taking in styles from the whole of the Mediterranean, borrowing from Punic and Hellenistic styles as well. It is linked to another important Libyan monuments, in Tunisia, the Lybico-Punic Mausoleum at Dougga.
This mausoleum was largely rebuilt by Libyan archaeologists from the 1920's. They used not only original stones. And instead borrowing stones from other structures, it is impossible to distinguish original from unoriginal.
